Jesus taught that the present experience of the kingdom he offered was not the whole picture, other stage of the kingdom yet to come.
At some point in future the kingdom of God will come in all his of his fullness.
Luk 21:27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
Luk 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
Many Jews had interpreted the old testament to teach that when the messiah come he will do away with the old age of sin and death, all at once and replace with the New age of the Kingdom. But Jesus Christ indicated that he was bringing the kingdom in stages. He inaugurated the kingdom in his earthly ministry. The kingdom continuously NOW as he reigns from Heaven, and will be consummately completed in the future when he returns.
Most Jews turn away from Jesus because the kingdom he describe didn’t look like the kingdom they expected and wanted. They expected the King and a kingdom that would over thrown Rome and free the Jews from roman oppression.
When Jesus showed no interested of being that kind of human king, many turn they backs and walk away.
Luk 17:20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
Luk 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
Luk 17:22 And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it.
Luk 17:23 And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them.
Luk 17:24 For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.
Luk 17:25 But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.
Joh 6:60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?
Joh 6:61 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?
Joh 6:62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
Joh 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
Joh 6:64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.
Joh 6:65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
Joh 6:66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
Joh 6:67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?
Joh 6:68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
Joh 6:69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
And off Course this rejection lead to Jesus execution and crucifixion. The great irony of the gospel is that Jesus death by crucifixion was as the same moment both climax of hostility against his kingship and the victory of his kingship and kingdom.
His resurrection was his path through royal throne of the right hand of God the father. This is why Jesus used the 40-days between his resurrection and ascension to teach his disciple about the kingdom of God.
Act 1:3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
Just before Jesus ascended in to Heaven, he said Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
